Used cars challenge "the tale of two Honda"

This time round I went to a dealer with mostly Honda cars. Now first things first, this dealer is not beautifying the cars history by respraying the exterior, rather, the saved money is put towards the buyer at a cheaper price.

I measured two Honda at the shop, one Accord and one CR-V

CR-V – a legend, considered highly reliable ……………….let’s have a look:

2003 registered, 226000 km mileage, sounds pretty much like a dead duck, right? Price 12900 MYR as is…………...

NOPE!

Engine delivered only 40% wear , a 3 Star results is simply great for a car with such mileage. Kudos to Honda , obviously good engines.

The car had some rough times, the exterior lacquer has many patches which prove the workhorse attitude.

Alternator was 20% worn, a 4 Star result, no worries

Gearbox 10% worn, 4.5 Stars , absolutely great.

Really a car in a value for money condition, however, the car would need paint work to look as good as the result.

As I need the car for company purpose, the looks killed this deal. But for anyone not as fussy, this might be a viable option to save money. I didn’t test drive, so I can’t judge fully.

- Honda Accord -

At the same dealer was a Honda Accord, registered 2006, 170000 km, again – untouched. Price 16900 RM

The interior was great, no real issues there. The exterior had scratches on both sides caused by a sharp object or a key.

On to the measurements:

- Engine was good, 30% wear and tear, 3.5 Stars. Again a very good result with high mileage.

- Alternator and gearbox were in excellent conditions, 10% wear, 4.5 Stars

So beside the scratches something to look forward to the test drive. The test drive is important to listen to any knocking, screeching, whining or even loud misfires which can be caused by many things. Here, the car drove very well but there was noise each time I accelerated. Most likely a small hole in the exhaust, definitely nothing I felt severe.

But, that means, it has to be remedied, checked, I am sure the dealer would have done.

The tires were worn, now I am German, a country with no speed limit on highways, I am very fussy about tires, brakes and suspension. So I would need to change the tires after the buy.

This and the many scratches on the exterior let me decide against the buy. But again, the quality of the car was there, for engine, gear box and alternator.

Nice guys as well, friendly, not pushy, no blablabla sales talk, no lame excuses. Well worth to check out.
